Shattered Echoes: Ruptures in collective memory
Curated by Anton Usanov and Hope Bartley
Participating artists: Juan Tardivo. Christian Evers, Hope Bartley
This exhibition revolves around the idea of initiation: the transition from one state of being to another - from dependence to responsibility, from perception to participation. Inspired by mythical and philosophical concepts such as Kant's Exit from self-inflicted immaturity the moment of rupture becomes the starting point: a symbolic death that tears us away from security and throws us into the unknown. Art is not understood here as an object of contemplation, but as a means of transformation - a place where ruptures become visible and tangible. Cracks, instability and incompleteness are not defects, but necessary elements of transition.
The exhibition understands creativity as an act of self-transgression in which the familiar is questioned and the fragmentary is accepted as part of our being. Following Slavoj Žižek, we understand the human being not as a closed whole, but as a subject structured around a lack. The works in this exhibition invite us to endure discomfort, to face up to the process of dissolution - and to ask: What has to break in order for something new to emerge? And do we really live without crutches - or in a world built from them?
